"I chose to become a carer because I’m deeply passionate about supporting adults with a range of needs, including those living with mental health challenges and dementia. My journey began with caring for my grandmother full-time for over five years, during which I gained invaluable hands-on experience and developed a strong understanding of compassionate, person-centered care. Prior to that, I also cared for my great-uncle during his end-of-life stage, which gave me early insight into the emotional and physical support people need during such sensitive times. Over the past five years, I have worked as a live-in carer through an agency and as an assistant carer. I am currently studying to become a nurse, which has deepened my knowledge and enhanced my clinical skills. My Key Responsibilities Have Included: Administering and prompting medication Supporting clients with dressing, washing, bathing, and all aspects of personal care, always maintaining dignity Assisting with continence care Observing and reporting any changes in mood, skin condition, or behavior to the care team Preparing meals and light housework duties Maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable home environment Supporting service users with their morning and evening routines Completing detailed care plans to ensure tailored, quality care I am compassionate, reliable, and respectful of each individual's needs and preferences. "My name is Ethel, I am an experienced, professional, and caring lady with over 20 years invested in the care and support of others. I did not intend to do live in care but repeated requests by clients and their families has led to me specialising in Live In and Domiciliary care for over 10 years. I still keep up to date with the practices in other sectors of the care sector, including nursing and care and care in the community, and still work in these environments. I have training and the practical experience in specialist areas, such as special needs, dementia, palliative care and others such as challenging behaviours, self-harm, violent outbursts, danger to the public and Autism and Down Syndromes. Myself and a few other African ladies have formed a club and invest resources etc. to help and empower Africans mainly back in Southern Africa, but also abroad to succeed, especially women, and encourage them to do the same for others.
