"Hi, my name is Serena, and I am 52 years old. I am originally from Italy, but I have been living in Scotland since 2013. Previously, I worked as a carer in my home country, where I was a live-in carer for a couple; the wife had Alzheimer's and the husband was 89 years old. Their daughter also faced challenges due to bipolar disorder, which presented me with several difficulties. I managed all household tasks, scheduled appointments, and administered medications. For almost three years, I have been looking after a lady with dementia and limited mobility. I then started working in care homes and the wider community, gaining knowledge about hoists, lifting techniques, and various stages of dementia. I have also obtained my SVQ3 qualification. I am very attentive to the needs of my clients and always strive to uplift them. I understand their situations and promote their independence, as well as their human rights. I have encountered behavioural challenges and have learned how to react in the best way to help individuals calm down. I can change stoma bags, use hoists, and cook. I have a car and would love to care for people in their homes, as I believe they feel more comfortable in familiar surroundings."

🏅 Top-Rated Local Carer

"Hi, my name is Danielle, and I would like to give you an insight into how I cared for my loved ones, the responsibilities I undertook to learn, and how I gained valuable experience from those I cared for. I have come to understand the different needs of others and how I can assist my clients in my role. I help with dressing and undressing, putting on slippers and shoes, showering, or assisting with top and tails when this is difficult for them depending on their day. My housework duties include washing, cleaning, hoovering, ironing, changing bedding, and other tasks as needed. When things go wrong for them—such as with the television, which is particularly important to my loved ones—I can assist with simple problems like changing batteries, sorting cables, and replacing light bulbs or phones, whether home or mobile. I understand how crucial medication is for health, and I ensure they receive theirs when needed. I change dressings (only with healthcare provider instructions), assist with foot care, cut nails, and stay vigilant for anything that may go wrong, especially for those who are diabetic; my dad faced numerous health issues over the years, and prompt treatment is essential. I organise all appointments, including hospital visits, doctors/nurses, podiatry, dietitian, and INR clinic sessions. I am more than willing to work with family members to ensure your loved one is well cared for. Over the years, my experience with my father's health has equipped me with the skills necessary to provide others with the care I can offer. In my spare time, I enjoy playing games such as dominoes, cards, and even jigsaw puzzles. I'm open to trying new games, so please feel free to teach me something new! I have a serious side, but I also have a fun side, and I adapt to their preferences. I love talking to others and hearing their life stories, especially from older people; their experiences are often fascinating. I believe one-on-one time is important if that is what is required. You can be assured that I will respectfully understand your loved one, treating them with compassion and looking after them as I would my own. Having been a carer for my dad for so long, I understand that all I ever wanted was to ensure he was well looked after—I even managed medication prompts for him four times daily after he experienced a second TIA. I promise to provide that same level of care. I am willing to answer any questions you may have before hiring me, especially if you are unsure. I would like to share how I became a carer. When I was a teenager, I began looking after my autistic nephew when my sister needed help during holidays or for respite. I started caring for my elderly father full-time in 2009 after he had a turn while we were shopping. I was classed as an unpaid carer, devoting my time to him at any time of day or night. We worked well together, and I knew him extremely well; I learned to recognise when he was unwell. Even a urine infection in an elderly person can cause confusion. He had diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis (which severely impacted his mobility), cellulitis in his very swollen legs (due to fluid), recurring diabetic ulcers, gout (which sometimes prevented him from walking), and chronic kidney disease (where a high potassium diet was crucial). He experienced three TIAs in front of me, all of which I managed promptly, as well as a heart attack while in hospital. My dad and family members believe I saved his life not just once. After the second TIA, he was left with cognitive impairment, and I had to adapt my care for him, ensuring he was never upset. I assisted him when needed, cleaning him after he wet or soiled himself, and I would shave his hair and beard when he was unwell. Otherwise, he maintained as much independence as possible, and I helped him achieve that. I took him shopping and on day trips to see family (his siblings). I am very committed and compassionate; I will look after others and listen as much as they wish to speak. I feel confident moving forward in this role. I lost my dad to COVID-19 in 2020 at the age of 85. Recently, I cared for an 86-year-old lady with late-stage dementia. She experienced sundowning, and her family wanted me there a few nights a week to care for her and provide reassurance. They needed respite as well, and she is now in full-time care. Family members are willing to provide references."
