"I have been a carer since the age of 20. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a carer after we took my grandmother to a care home and the care assistants were so friendly. I realised that this was the same thing I wanted to do: see the elderly happy in the latter stages of their lives. I have five years of experience in care, with expertise in learning disabilities, as well as working with early and late-stage dementia patients. I began my career in a care home, where I gained significant experience in moving and handling, using different equipment such as hoists, Sara Steady, and commodes. My longest live-in role was two years with the same client who had Parkinson’s and dementia, during which I was also responsible for medication safeguarding, so I acquired a lot of experience in that area. I love the outdoors and enjoy taking walks and gardening. I consider myself a tidy person, so I don’t mind doing light housework, such as cleaning up after myself and my client and tackling a bit of dusting and other light tasks."

"I possess over fifteen years of professional and voluntary service, with an invaluable set of skills and experiences within the academic, business development, management, charity, and health and social care sectors. It has been a great privilege and opportunity for me to learn new and effective ways of delivering positive solutions to the various challenges that confront children, adults, and their families within the community. Over the last few years, I have been involved in both charity and community development projects, where I have been privileged to hold roles of increasing responsibility by helping individuals, families, groups, and communities enhance their individual and collective well-being. I enjoy helping individuals develop their skills and utilise their abilities and the resources available to them within the community to address their various needs or challenges. I realised that there is a need for people who are passionate about joining a team of resilient, patient, and caring individuals who share a collective goal of alleviating the conditions of those in our community who suffer from various forms of social deprivation, particularly issues currently reflecting the impact of the ongoing global pandemic. This is the reason why I decided to pursue a career as a Carer and Support Worker. I have had the privilege of completing various degree programmes, including the NVQ Level 3 in Working with Children and Young People, which has enabled me to develop a unique practice when engaging with people and interdisciplinary professionals on different issues arising during my work experience with children, young people, and their families. I have been able to reflect on my knowledge of the laws, legislation, and government policies involved in health and social care, learning about abuse and the various forms it can present in individuals, and how to apply my skills and experiences to support individuals in making positive choices regarding their current situations. However, I understand that working as a healthcare assistant, support worker, or nurse is much more than learning about legislation, rules, and regulations. The range of experiences gained whilst working with children and families, as well as with the elderly and vulnerable adults, has equipped me with a variety of valuable skills relevant to the health and social care sector. One of these skills is my ability to listen; being a good listener has been immensely beneficial to me both personally and professionally. Together with my partner, I have successfully raised children of our own, which has improved my confidence and enables me to relate to families dealing with various challenges in everyday life. During my time as a carer for my elderly parents, I developed the ability to understand and apply the various communication skills needed to support elderly and vulnerable adults. This experience has been fulfilling, as it allows me to provide profound support in making life comfortable and meaningful for individuals."
