ABOUT ME I am unavailable for placements as of 21/11/2024 as I will be returning to Australia for a short period of time I was born in Malawi (or Southern Rhodesia as it was back in the "60's) Africa and had a wonderful childhood growing up both in Malawi and then Rhodesia before moving to South Africa just after the Rhodesian war. I now live in Australia but often return to the UK for 6 months at a time. My parents were both British. I was blessed to have been able to care for my mum in her own home for the last 5 weeks of her life up in York. I am family orientated and have 7 grandchildren. I love the outdoors. Walking and especially long distance walks are my passion. I have a certificate 4 in Aged Care (Australia) and a Level 2 Award, high distinction in End-of-Life Care (25/10/2020)- Oplex Careers (England) and am on the enhanced DBS update service. I have done live-in care work in the UK on and off since 2014 and happy to work around the UK. I do prefer smaller towns and or rural but happy to do repsite placements in the bigger cities. I have looked after clients with dementia, cancer, Parkinson's and MS and have done catheter care, stoma care and peg feeding. I am proficient in the use of hoists, both standing hoists and full sling hoists. I love doing high end care and have looked after clients on palliative care. Personality wise I am quiet, helpful, non-judgemental, compassionate and respectful. I work with clients to achieve their goals and best outcomes alongside the family and allied health professionals if appropriate. I am also happy to work alongside another carer/share work.
For me working as a live-in carer (I would live in my client’s house and work for 4-5-6 weeks in a row then I take a break for 1-2 weeks) is an opportunity to help people live independent, helping them remain in their own home when they may not be able to look after themselves, provide support and remain dignity during all daily activities, protect them from any form of harm or abuse, risk assessment and evaluation to prevent any possible deterioration of their physical or mental health, promote of a positive environment in order to encourage independence for each individual. Ever since I remember myself I have worked with people, around people and caring for people. In my personal life experience I have spent 4 years looking after my mum due to cancer since a young age and for 7 years I was caring for my ex-partner who suffered from kidney failure. I became a carer in 2003. Worked in several residential homes and obtained my NVQ Qualification. I then took on a number of care related courses and training to support my personal development in care, like Moving and Handling, Risk Assessment, First Aid, Food Hygiene and many others. In the past years I helped a few of my disabled acquaintances as a volunteer as and when help was needed. In 2019 I have met absolutely wonderful elderly couple and for two years as a live-in carer I looked after all of their needs in a comfort of their own home. Both of them had moderate and then severe Dementia. We had a lot of fun together, enjoyed walking around Marina, made a BBQ in the summer and get ourselves warm with a lovely cup of tea at the Garden Centre on the cold days of the year. I have worked very closely with the couple’s GP surgery, nurses and other health professionals and authorities to keep this couple healthy, safe and comfortable at all times. I have looked after their medications, post, appointments, food shopping, cooking, house maintenance and laundry as well as every day personal care duties and organising special occasions for them too. During the past two years I have had the privilege to care for a Member of the Order of the British Empire, Mr A.,MBE - the most interesting and clever gentleman and his wife in their own stunning house surrounded by the magnificent and breathtaking views. When I met Mr A. in 2023 his memory and abilities were already affected by neurocognitive disorder. We have managed to remain and keep him in a positive and calm environment every day. As the mornings were the most active times, we had our “Fun Club” time before breakfast when we practiced to stimulate his memory, whistle, playing music or playing with words and making new words. Mr A. is a very content individual when it comes to music that is so important to him. Although he stopped playing piano himself, every time he listened to his music he just closed his eyes and immersed himself into a world on his own filled with music and life memories. I was taking on different house chores every week to keep the household running and participated in cooking meals, serving tables, making fire, food shopping, watering plants inside and in the garden, feeding birds, laundry and dealing with some DIY challenges and even bats in the house :) When I am back from work I love spending time with my family. We enjoy relaxing in the garden, going for a walk and travelling abroad. I am also a massive fan of crafting and could spend hours in my workshop. However lately we are concentrating on the interior of the house and thinking of decorating it soon.
