While living abroad 20 years ago, I was struck by a car whilst walking on the pavement. As a result, I spent months in hospital and in recovery for the better part of a year. I became a carer two years ago, and I draw upon this experience and channel my empathy to all the men I look after. In the years I've been a carer, my personal approach to care-giving has yielded significant results. To give one example: the connection and trust I built with one 93-year old gentleman led him to stop sleeping on the living room sofa and start sleeping in his hospital bed in his bedroom for the first time in years. He'd been very resistant, but now sees the benefits: he cited having a good night's sleep and less back pain. Preparing fresh food for him also made a big difference, and he is now eating at least one full meal a day. In so many small ways, I know I am making a difference - from ensuring their hearing aids or internet connection are working to connecting with their friends or medical assistants, my approach can best be summed up as personal, tailored, and empathetic.  SW6 7UB 1070 Hi, my name is Joanne and I have been in the care industry for over 9 years. I became a carer from a personal experience. I have a slight disability with my arm and have limited use of it but this does not stop me working and caring for others in a professional way and am still able to use hoists and provide personal care plus a number of other duties. I have managed to follow my passion regardless of my own disability, which is supporting clients live independently in their own homes. I have experience caring for clients in residential homes, nursing homes in the community doing door to door care and I have also provided live-in care also. I have always had a passion for care and looking after people, I have always wanted to do care from a young age ever since I started helping my mum care for my grandma who suffered from a mental health illness. I also get on well with people and I am always here to provide companionship and support.
