Live-in care involves a professional carer staying in your loved one’s home and providing personalised support throughout the day.

The carer becomes a familiar presence, helping with everyday tasks while encouraging the person to remain as independent as possible. Support may include:

Washing, dressing and personal care

Preparing meals and drinks

Medication reminders

Mobility and transfer assistance

Shopping and light household tasks

Companionship and emotional reassurance

Attending appointments and social activities

Support after illness or hospital discharge

Maintaining hobbies and familiar routines

A live-in carer must also have agreed breaks, suitable accommodation and time to sleep. Where someone needs continuous awake support throughout the day and night, a team-based 24-hour care arrangement may be more appropriate.

Live-in care may be suitable when a person needs regular assistance but wishes to remain in familiar surroundings.

It may be worth considering if your loved one:

No longer feels safe or confident living alone

Needs help several times throughout the day

Has reduced mobility or a higher risk of falling

Is living with dementia or another long-term condition

Feels lonely, anxious or unsettled without company

Needs support after leaving hospital

Wishes to remain at home with a partner or pet

Would prefer one-to-one support to residential care

Live-in care can also help couples remain together at home, depending on their individual needs and the level of support required.

The best arrangement should reflect the person’s health, routine, preferences and night-time needs—not simply the number of tasks they need help with.

Bridging the Gap Between Hourly and Live-In Care

Most of our Newcastle upon Tyne families start small—maybe a few morning visits a week. But eventually, you might find yourself constantly checking your phone or jumping every time it rings, wondering if everything is okay at home. That 'gap' between visits is where the stress lives. Moving to live-in care isn't about giving up independence; it’s about losing the anxiety. It means knowing that if they need a glass of water or a hand getting to the bathroom at 3 AM, someone is already there. It’s about letting you go back to being a daughter or a son, rather than a 24/7 coordinator.

"Margaret responded to a late request for help when our Mum’s usual Carer was unavailable and what a terrific find she was. Her communications were excellent and she quickly fitted in making Mum feel at ease, whilst providing excellent care and companionship. She was happy to cook whatever Mum wanted, along with trying some foods that Mum wouldn’t normally have - much appreciated. Although only with us for a week, I would recommend her and be happy to ask her to come again to look after Mum. "
