I believe that my diverse personal and professional background will really enhance my performance as a live-in carer.” Key areas of experience: dementia, Parkinson’s, depression, Bi-Polar, spinal injuries, learning disabilities, quadriplegia, stroke, Alzheimer’s, hip replacements, bed-bound, hearing impairment. I have worked with a large range of individuals and couples living with medical and age-related conditions including dementia, Parkinson’s and depression to name but a few. I have been required to differentiate between the varying needs of my customers in order to provide them with consistent and relevant care and companionship. Despite being a live-in carer for a number of years, I continued to work with passion and precision and I always prioritised the needs of my customers. I have supported my customers with their personal care, administered their medication and applied prescribed creams. I have completed household tasks which enabled my customers to continue living in clean and comfortable surroundings at home. I have also prepared meals that are suited to my customers dietary requirements, assisted them with feeding when required and prompted my customers to drink plenty of fluids. As some of my customers had dysphagia and difficulty swallowing, I pureed their food and encouraged them to drink thickening liquids. I also have experience in the use of PEG feeding tubes. I have patiently supervised and monitored my customers when they mobilised, whilst also being patient. I have provided my customers with mobility support through the safe and correct use of moving and handling processes and have experience in using mobility aids such as handling belts. When providing care to my customers, I also promote their independence and give them the opportunity to make their own decisions. If I think that they can complete certain tasks independently I consult with my customers and offer sensitive and gentle encouragement to them. However, I always remain close by to offer assistance if required. I use my exceptional communication skills to regularly interact with my customer to find out if they require any additional support. For my customers who had hearing impairments, l gained eye contact and talked in a clear and slow manner. I have even used communication aids such as microphones to ensure my customers understand everything I said to them. I gained my most valuable experience whilst caring for my mother. After my mother was diagnosed with Dementia, I provided her with dedicated care. I feel that because of this personal experience she have “the advantage of understanding the needs of a customer from the perspective of a carer and a family member.” As a result, l am able to adopt a care approach that considers not only the customer, but also their family and all other members involved in their care. Personality I was born in Aberdeen, but grew up in Lagos in Nigeria. I later came back to the UK and am currently residing in Bradford. Having lived and worked in three different countries, I have had the opportunity to relate to people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music and sermons, and watching Christian channels on TV. I describe myself as a compassionate, empathetic, observant person who is a good listener and sensitive to the needs of others. As a person I believe in honesty, hard work and credibility.
