I am able to support with hygiene, toileting, meal preparation and eating. I have a clean drivers licence. I became a carer while I was teaching, looking after my dad and decided to carry on. That was for me the best time I had ever had with my dad and got to know him more as we spent a lot of time together. I realised I have always looked after people as teaching not only requires you to impart knowledge but to build relationships with the students you are working with and most importantly build and protect their mental health. I am a deputy manager who is currently studying NVQ Level 5( Leader in Adult Care). I am responsible for delegating tasks to other care assistants, especially encouraging junior carers to respect not only the healthcare needs of the residents but also their dignity. This has greatly benefited not only my interpersonal awareness - I am now better able to take the time to listen to others - but also my management of time; a quality I believe is essential in providing care as most meals plans, medication and personal care sessions are timetabled. Working in such a person centred environment has been incredibly eye-opening. I have learnt a great deal about how to support patients, make informed decisions as well as realised the importance of building relationships with patients. Once relationships built on respect and transparency are in place I have not glonly been better able to assist patients but also found myself in a better position to help them gain knowledge on how to get well and care for themselves again; often working together to make decisions and realise goals. As a deputy manager, I am a key worker for a number of residents, I am responsible for monitoring changes in well-being and ensuring updated healthcare plans are kept. I sit in with Nurses and Healthcare Professionals, provide my assessment of the residents, and am responsible for relaying the Professional’s advice to other members of the care team. One of the major lessons personal care has taught me, along with the need for precise and coherent note-taking, is a respect of the levels of confidentiality needed when transferring privileged patient information.
