Coming from a finance academic background, this was a major shift from any other course I had done in my life. However, it was necessitated by the need to volunteer at a nursing home which had recently opened in my community. I come from a culture where we highly value the elders in our community, and the chance to interact with them, attend to their daily needs and ensure they are able to carry on with life as comfortably as possible was my driving force. This is only something I was during on my free time; little did I know that it would become a full-time job. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work as a health care assistant in various capacities. I have worked in nursing homes, home-based care, worked as a support worker for persons with learning disabilities and also worked as a mental health support worker in a mental & addictions hospital. I love to treat anyone who is under my care with utmost respect and dignity, no different than what I would like any of my close family to be treated by a carer. I customize my care approach based on the client`s specific needs, because I understand that we are all different. In instances where the client already has a care plan, I strictly adhere to the care plan. Finally, I always listen to those placed under my care; it does not matter if they have severe dementia, or mental illness. We all want to be listened to, and one deserves to be patronized. I`m highly experienced in manual handling. Having worked in various nursing homes, I have come across a wide variety of hoists, specially customized to each service user based on their needs. Moreover, my years working in both home care and nursing homes has provided me with loads of experience when it comes to helping service users with their nutrition and dietary needs. On the other hand, working as a HCA in mental health and addictions treatment program, has been life changing for me. It has taught me to be patient and empathetic, and the realization that sometimes all people need is someone who will give a listening ear without passing judgment. I`m always eager to learn new skills, and working at a new station or with a new client is always an opportunity to learn something new. Furthermore, I`m always keen to learn new things in my role as a health care assistant so that I can continue providing the best service to my clients. I`m flexible to work with both male and female clients.
