The saying that health is wealth is lost on us until the tides begin to turn. I have had to reflect on the foregoing a lot because I have either been around people who need care or I have been privileged to know who give care, wholeheartedly, compassionately and dedicatedly. I have had to provide care for loved ones who by virtue of aging, disability or ill health needed to have support. My grandmother had care at home for some time until her demise. More than anything else, the daily chatter, the laugh and smile were what she cherished most as they helped to keep her loneliness away. I found that perhaps one of the greatest human needs is the need to not feel lonely. Pain, sleeplessness, immobility and a sense of hopelessness often experienced by those who need care become easy to deal with when there is an understanding and compassionate care worker. I believe I qualify to regard myself as one. I have worked in care for 2 years and still counting. I found that I have thoroughly enjoyed doing it. While I take cognizance of the need to be professional and set boundaries, my work with service users required that I show empathy. Empathy is shown by doing and I strive to relate with service users from this standpoint, often making efforts to make them comfortable, feel loved and respected. I love care work. I am thus preparing myself to be the best that I can be at this.
