However, from an early age, I have always had a desire to help and to care for people. I am very passionate about caring for vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly. I do believe that I can make a great impact in their live’s by helping them to improve their physical and mental well-being. As a senior carer working in the care industry, this has enabled me to further my interest in persuading a career in mental health nursing, as I am certain, that this will offer me the opportunity to study in a practical and academic field that would be very rewarding for me. I have gathered many experiences while providing domiciliary and home care. This has taught me empathy and patience and has equipped me with the necessary skills to assist me to become a mental health nurse. Working at a nursing home as a team leader has given me the privilege to assist service users who suffer from mental health disorders. I’m also volunteering as an outreach worker with Age Concern. I have gained practical experiences and understanding about the challenges in the real role of becoming a mental health nurse. In addition to this, some of my daily responsibilities included writing up observation report, interacting with clients, promoting person centred care, assisting nurses with medication, updating personal records, providing care and supervision for resident who suffer from schizophrenia and liaising with the NHS and other care professionals providing the relevant care for each resident in the home. This has helped me to realise how valuable my services are and is required in the health sector. I am currently studying at university in my final year doing a bachelor honour degree in Community Development and Leadership. This course is a remarkable learning opportunity that has taught me about empowering different communities and meeting their needs. I have obtained qualifications in both NVQ and BTEC levels two and three in Health & Social Care and a Diploma in Access to Social Work. While doing the access course, my favourite module was psychology. This helped me to understand the behaviour of the human mind, which includes unconscious and conscious phenomena, including both feelings and thoughts. In our society, mental health issues could be the most common disorder and can affect anyone. Furthering my ambition to become a mental health nurse, I’m mindful of the importance of treating everyone in a non -judgemental manner and to respect equality within a mental health setting such as working with clients and colleagues from different culture and religion. I have gained exceptional communication skills through working within the care industry. Using good eye contact and body language has help me to communicate effectively when dealing with service users especially those who has speech impairment, I sometime uses objects such as a spoon to demonstrate when is meal time or even a towel to indicate when it is time for a shower.
