Because of my compassionate and patient nature, when 2 of my close relations developed serious medical issues, I gave up my day job as a banker to take care of them. The first, was my partner of 17 years, developed diabetes and high blood pressure and I was tasked with ensuring that took his medications daily and kept his doctors visit. After suffering a stroke, he was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation and needed 24 hours monitoring. The stroke left him with severe weakness on his left side and he would not allow anyone but me to take care of him. I had to give him baths, help him in the toilet, take him to physiotherapy and doctor visits, cook and clean and provide fun filled activities to keep him entertained. As he recovered, his mom who was around 82 and lived alone when her Dementia became obvious, needed care. Like most Dementia patients she did not trust the housekeepers and caretakers that were employed to assist her, so I was assigned to taking her to the bank and stores and sitting for very long hours with her, watching tv and talking about everything that she could remember. The stories were repetitive, but my patience never ran out and I would always find a way to make her laugh. Dementia patients hide their personal belongings and so I would help her find ‘missing’ items and also secure very important documents so that they were safe. I would sit with her to ensure that she ate and dispense her medication twice daily. I am very good at keeping a log of medications, blood pressure and sugar testing and monitoring symptoms. I have excellent communication skills, am a great listener and genuinely enjoy taking care of the elderly and sick. I am gentle, caring and my friendly, approachable and kind demeanour make it easy for people to trust me and be comfortable around me. Over the past 3 months, I have been doing live in placements for Spinal injury patients. Have developed quite a bit of skills in Bowel care and hoisting and some catheter daily care skills. I am trying to focus on hourly care but now have lots of experience dealing with clients who require live in or overnight care Finally, I am very hardworking and continue to do training in various areas to ensure that I can administer quality care to all clients.
