    I was born in Kenya but have been living in the UK for over 20 years. I am a mum of two grown-up boys, and most of my family still lives in Kenya; I go back once a year to visit them. I am a mum of two grown-up boys, and most of my family still lives in Kenya; I go back once a year to visit them. I speak three languages: English, Swahili, and Kikuyu, which is my mother tongue. I have been a carer for the last 15 years, working in nursing and residential homes, dementia units, mental health units, and live-in care. I describe myself as caring, reliable, respectful, understanding, non-judgemental, professional, and a good listener. I treat people with the respect and dignity they deserve, and it gives me great pleasure to know that I make a difference in someone's life and help them live a good and independent life. It is very important to understand individual needs, which helps to build a good rapport with the client. I have worked for the NHS for the last six years and have gained skills in different aspects, working as part of a team and also individually looking after people in the community. I am always willing to learn new things and to learn from my mistakes; I ask for help when I am not sure about something. Four years ago, I went to college hoping to go to university to train as a midwife, as I think it is a wonderful thing to see a new life begin. However, as they say, life happened, and I had to put that thought on the back seat, but it is not forgotten. I never say never. I try to maintain a work-life balance, so when I am not working, I like visiting friends, watching movies, and taking long walks. I have also developed an interest in motorcycles after being introduced to them by my partner. At the moment, I am happy as a pillion, but I will start riding lessons soon. I take life a day at a time.

    Susan brightens my day by; * Having a coffee and a chat with me when she arrives. * Seeing what needs doing in the house and garden and gets on with it with little prompting. * Helps me engage with the local community again: we went into an Infants School last week. Although she had never stood in front of a class before, she talked to the children who were doing a project on her native Kenya. A kind, thoughtful and brave carer . . .
