My main expertise lie in caring for people with dementia, supporting individuals to form, build upon and maintain memories, independence and feelings of well being. I have completed a degree in social work, writing my dissertation on the benefits of horticultural therapy for people living with dementia. I later worked with the Alzheimer’s Society as a dementia adviser. However, much of my knowledge and expertise in this area has come from the people I have cared for and the very many things caring for them has taught me. In addition, I have a wide range of experience caring for people from different walks of life with vastly differing needs, wishes and abilities. These roles have included caring for people living with acquired brain injuries, Huntington’s disease, post stroke, motor neurone disease, and providing care for people at the end of their lives. I am empathetic, compassionate and self reflective. I enjoy getting to know the people I care for, learning about each person’s life experiences and the things that are important to them. I love discovering what brings people laughter and joy, and what helps them to feel safe, content and happy. I work hard to learn how each individual wants to live, and to discover the ways of caring that feel right for them, whilst enabling as much independence as possible. I live in Skipton, a beautiful town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. I love plants and animals and nature in general. In my spare time I volunteer on a community allotment and for a charity helping elderly and terminally ill people look after their pets. I really enjoy playing tennis, hiking and cycling, and exploring the wonderful world we live in. Whilst one of my favourite parts of the world is the Western isles and cost of Scotland, I have travelled through over 100 countries, and hope to be able to explore many more. It would be lovely to hear from you if you feel I might be able to provide the care you or someone in your life need. Thank you very much for reading, Mel
