I choose to work where possible with rehabilitation and quality living in mind. And as actively and positively as possible at all times. I have cared professionally for people with dementia, two specifically with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, one with a brain tumour and brain injury and one with complex physical conditions not affecting cognition. I have an special understanding of neurological injury and rehabilitation. As a child I was always drawn to caring, either babysitting or caring for grandparents. I worked with adults with learning difficulties in my twenties as part of my University Combined Studies degree in Human Communication and Communication Disorders and Social Anthropology. I love communication. It is fundamental, in whatever form it can happen. I approach caring for someone as caring for the whole of someone's life, their physical health - maintaining the best of it for the future and their social health - involving family and friends, helping with remembering cards and gifts, inviting friends over, having walks, making visits, entertaining guests etc. Always in the hope of fulfilling as much of someone's desires to enjoy life to the maximum they can.
The 'care' aspect is fundamental, of course, the basics, being clean, fed, watered, medications taken and well slept, those are all a given in the caring role. I consider my role to be one of helping someone enjoy a fuller sense of living and life on top of those, helping stay in touch with friends, family and living fully with as much physical and mental well-being as possible. That's 'Carrie on Caring'!
