My name is Helen. I am an experienced care/support worker, having worked in the sector since 2007. Throughout my career, I have actively participated in continuous personal development, gaining not only qualifications but also a vast array of experience. I started my career in domiciliary care, undertaking daily visits to clients in their own homes. This predominantly involved working with individuals with early to late-stage dementia and elderly care. However, I also cared for clients with degenerative and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
My next role was with the palliative care team in Christchurch, where I cared for people in their final weeks of life. This role involved not only supporting individuals to achieve a dignified and comfortable death but also providing support to family and loved ones throughout this process. In this position, I worked closely with a multi-disciplinary team that included nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and general practitioners.
I currently work as a support worker, assisting people who have learning disabilities and mental health concerns. I am passionate about enabling my clients to live life to the fullest and to be as independent as their conditions allow. This role allows me to work with individuals who require minimal support day-to-day, such as in finances and shopping, as well as those who need full 24-hour packages with two support staff. Throughout my varied career, I have completed care-related NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications and I have become competent and confident in the following skills:
- Palliative care
- Medication administration
- Accurate record-keeping and auditing of documentation
- Writing and reviewing care plans as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Catheter care; I have been trained for individual clients by a district nurse and am willing to undergo specific training for prospective clients as required
- Stoma care; I have been trained for individual clients by a district nurse and am willing to undergo specific training for prospective clients as required.
I have my own car, which has business insurance, allowing me to take clients out if they do not have access to their own transport. This car has enough space for a manual wheelchair if required, which could be useful if a client would like to go shopping, participate in activities, or access outdoor spaces for exercise or simply to enjoy the fresh air.
I consider myself to be very sociable and chatty, and I genuinely enjoy caring for and supporting different individuals. I love to cook, and I maintain a well-balanced diet myself; I would be more than happy to assist with nutrition and cooking for anyone who requires this support. I am passionate about my job and the positive impact I can have on other people's lives. I am a trustworthy and reliable person, and being German, I appreciate being organised and punctual!
