Supporting people in their own homes, particularly during times of illness, increasing frailty or at the end of life, is a responsibility I never take for granted. I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and genuine respect, and I aim to ensure that everyone I support feels safe, valued and truly heard.
Families often describe me as calm, dependable and kind. I believe trust is built by listening carefully, being patient, communicating honestly and, where appropriate, sharing a gentle sense of humour. My role is not simply to assist with practical care but to help create an environment where people feel comfortable, respected and able to remain themselves.
Alongside many years of live-in care, I have worked as a Lead Teaching Assistant and Restorative Justice Counselling Officer. In a specialist educational setting, I supported young people with autism spectrum conditions (including Asperger’s syndrome), Down syndrome, dyslexia and other neurodevelopmental differences. These experiences strengthened my communication skills, patience and understanding of how to adapt my approach to meet each individual’s unique needs.
I have extensive experience supporting people with complex care needs and am confident working independently or as part of a two-carer team. I am equally comfortable working alongside resident family members and around household pets. Being welcomed into someone’s home is a privilege, and I always strive to respect each family’s routines, relationships, privacy and personal space.
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking (I’m vegan but very happy to prepare non-vegan meals), reading, gardening and playing acoustic guitar. Before moving into care, I worked in pottery studios, antique shops and art galleries while supporting myself through university, and I still have a deep appreciation for creativity and beautiful surroundings.
I’m a little quirky—I have blue hair!—but at heart, I’m quite traditional. I value courtesy, kindness and the gentle manners of times gone by, and I try to bring those qualities into every interaction. I’m also an all-year-round sea swimmer, which keeps me grounded, resilient and connected to nature.
Originally from South Africa, I now call the UK home. Over the years, caring has taught me as much as it has allowed me to give. It has confirmed something I have long suspected—that my greatest sense of purpose comes from being of service to others.
