I have being a caregiver for my mother and brother all my life , in 2010 I started caring for my mother full time who had a series of mini strokes which made living with her learning disabilities worse, I also became the full time career to my younger brother who has learning disabilities and metal health issues, in 2015 my mum passed away and I carried on being the full time career for my brother. It was when I was looking for help from the local authorities to get help with my brother even if it was for someone to take him out for a few hours a day I learned how bad the care on offer was really bad and I started coming up with new ways to help my brother get more independence he’s gone from been totally dependent on others and not been able to do much for himself to been able to dress and undress himself, wash himself in the bath, travel to the local shops independently, taking the bus to and from Hillsborough on his own, using a picture chart to get a small amount of shopping on his own. I am great at listening to people relaying back info in ways their can understand it’s amazing how just doing this can make it so much easier to communicate and build up a rapport with someone.
